A service call covers two things: a technician's time to travel to your home and diagnose the problem, plus whatever repair or adjustment gets done on that visit. The base diagnostic fee at McCorry runs $150–$160 for most standard calls.

From there, the total climbs based on:

• Parts needed — a capacitor is $80–$150 in parts; a refrigerant recharge adds more
• Time on site — simple fixes take 30 minutes; hunting down an intermittent fault can take two hours
• Equipment type — mini splits, boilers, and heat pumps take longer to work on than a basic gas furnace
• Age of system — older equipment sometimes requires more diagnostics before the root cause is clear

The $150 Call vs. the $600+ Call — What's the Difference?

The lower end of our data — $150 to $160 — is almost always a diagnostic visit where the fix was something simple: a tripped breaker, a clogged filter the homeowner hadn't changed, a thermostat setting, or a component replacement that took 20 minutes. We still charge for the trip and the technician's time, but if there's nothing to fix or nothing to fix on that visit, that's what you pay.

How to Reduce What You Pay

The best way to reduce the frequency and cost of service calls is a preventive maintenance plan. Our customers on PM plans average lower per-call costs because problems get caught during scheduled visits instead of emergency situations. We also waive or discount diagnostic fees for plan customers on covered equipment.

Beyond that:

• Change your filter. Seriously. A dirty filter causes more HVAC failures than anything else and doesn't require a service call to fix.
• Keep your condensate drain clear (pour a cup of diluted bleach down it once a year).
• Know where your circuit breakers are. A tripped breaker doesn't need a technician.

When to Call vs. When to Wait
